There's no single "normal" number of puffs per day.[cite: 14] Studies have found very different averages depending on who was measured and how.[cite: 14] And importantly, those numbers describe typical use, not a safe limit.[cite: 14]
The numbers below show how much puff counts can vary, and why puff count alone is a poor measure of nicotine use.[cite: 14]
How many puffs do people take, according to studies?

Three real studies, three very different numbers.[cite: 14] That doesn't mean one of them has to be wrong.[cite: 14] They looked at different groups of people and measured their use in different ways.[cite: 14]
Why puff count doesn't tell you how much nicotine you're using
A puff isn't a standard unit.[cite: 14]
Nicotine concentration can vary a lot between e-liquids, from close to 0 to more than 50 mg/mL (Gholap et al., 2020).[cite: 14] How long you inhale and what kind of device you're using can also change how much nicotine one puff represents.[cite: 14]
One study of experienced vapers shows the problem clearly: at a 6W power setting, participants took 57 puffs and consumed about 3.5 mg of nicotine.[cite: 14] At 10W, they took fewer puffs, 46, but consumed more nicotine, about 4.2 mg (Farsalinos et al., 2018).[cite: 14]
Why "140 puffs is normal" is the wrong takeaway
You may have seen claims that the average vaper takes around 132 to 140 puffs a day.[cite: 14] In 2015, researchers analyzed more than a million puffs recorded by a connected e-cigarette used by 185 people over 6,144 user-days.[cite: 14] They found a mean of 163 puffs per day and a median of 132 (140 when excluding low-use days) (Dautzenberg & Bricard, 2015).[cite: 14]
Both numbers are real data points from that specific cohort, but not universal benchmarks.[cite: 14] None of these studies establishes a safe daily puff limit.[cite: 14]
Does a lower puff count mean vaping is safe?
Not really.[cite: 14] Puff count and health risk aren't the same question.[cite: 14] A 2025 systematic review found evidence of more respiratory problems among non-smokers who currently vaped than among non-users (Kundu et al., 2025).[cite: 14]
The U.S. Surgeon General has also warned that nicotine exposure during adolescence can harm brain development (U.S. Surgeon General, 2016).[cite: 14] Current research doesn't give us a number below which vaping can be called risk-free.[cite: 14]
